Hand Building

Madame Butterfly by Debbie HoferStudents will be introduced to the hand building of pinch, coil and slab as well as basic design techniques to create functional and nonfunctional clay objects. Through instruction of these techniques, students will begin to recognize the properties, possibilities and limitations of clay and acquire skills to perfect their work and create aesthetically pleasing forms with strong craftsmanship.

Students who have already acquired the basic techniques of hand building and design will be able to build upon their skills to create more advanced works.

    • dish towel
    • large sponge
    • small plastic bowl
    • 5-gallon bucket with lid
    • 1-gallon bucket
    • set of pottery tools
    • apron
    • either two plastic garbage bags or dry cleaner plastic or a box of saran wrap
    • small spray bottle
    • sketchpad and pencils and separate eraser
    • small bottles of hand lotion

    $50 (due to the instructor on the first day of class)
